When to refer

Botulinum toxin treatment is approved for the treatment of a variety of neurological disorders, including:

  • Blepharospasm

  • Hemifacial spasm

  • Spasmodic torticollis

  • Upper and lower limb spasticity

  • Chronic migraine

  • Severe primary axillary hyperhydrosis

How to refer

Dr Yi-Zhong Zhuang is currently the only practitioner providing botulinum toxin treatment at Western Neurology. Botulinum toxin access under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is governed by strict clinical criteria. These criteria can be found here. Due to these regulations, as well as the need to develop a suitable treatment plan, botulinum toxin treatment is only available after an initial clinical consultation with Dr Zhuang. Please address your referral to Dr Zhuang including details of symptoms, duration, examination findings, progression and relevant medical history, as well as any previous treatments tried and the response and/or adverse effects. It is important to include specific information relevant to meeting the PBS criteria for botulinum toxin for their condition.

If you’d like to discuss an urgent or complex case, or if you’re unsure whether this treatment is suitable for your patient’s situation, please do not hesitate to contact us on (08) 8243 0975 to discuss your case with a specialist prior to referral.

You may refer your patient using a brief clinical letter addressed to Dr Yi-Zhong Zhuang. Please include the specific question regarding eligibility for botulinum toxin therapy.
